VR helps people with autism & Down syndrome learn life skills
Virtual reality may be best known for games, but at Kennedy Krieger Institute, it is being used for something far more practical: safely crossing the street, catching a bus, shopping, and preparing for a job interview.
Four young adults with autism or Down syndrome are participating in a pilot program using Meta Quest 2 headsets and Floreo, a virtual reality learning platform. The participants are members of CORE Foundations, a Kennedy Krieger program focused on community participation, employment, and greater independence.
The virtual environments allow participants to repeat activities at their own pace without the risks and distractions of a busy street or crowded bus. The lessons are then reinforced in the real world, helping participants build the confidence and skills needed to navigate their communities more independently.
Adaptive technology supports independence after four amputations
Candice Davis had both arms and legs amputated following a severe case of COVID-19 in 2021. Today, the former flight attendant is using assistive technology as she works toward living more independently.
At Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, Davis uses a wheelchair-mounted phone attachment with voice controls that help her operate devices and search online. She has also learned to put on and use a prosthetic arm without assistance—and even uses it to do her makeup.
The story is a good reminder that assistive technology does not always have to look futuristic. Sometimes the most meaningful innovations are thoughtfully arranged devices that let someone communicate, control their surroundings, and handle everyday tasks on their own.
Scanning pens make classroom reading more accessible
An Australian school is using scanning pens to help students with literacy challenges access classroom materials with less reliance on teachers.
Students can move a C-Pen over printed text and hear the words read aloud through headphones. This allows students who struggle with decoding to concentrate more of their attention on understanding the information.
King Street Public School initially tested the pens with students who had significant literacy and language needs. After seeing improved confidence and independence, the school expanded their use across classrooms, small groups, and individual support settings. Making the pens available to everyone also helps students receive assistance without being singled out.
